{{portrait}} = violinist is a digitally manipulated photographic portrait of the subject and her instrument. Like the other “saints” in the series, the subject carries a token of significance to her identity—in this case, a violin. However, the token is no longer visually recognizable as a violin outside of the context of her interaction with it. The violinist’s facial features are also obscured amidst the haze of her activity, blurring the distinction between the agency of the subject, the agency of the object, and the agency of performative action itself in the constitution of her identity. Her instrumentality within the portrait is further complicated by the intervention of the digital medium. At what point does her physical form stop and the digital landscape begin? What remains of the subject in her portrait?
